other worlds—unseen to all other humans—otherwise there is no possible way that one can
know that the information he or she is receiving was not an invention of his or her own
mind. The evidence of the visitation’s reality is given to the mortal by seeing and hearing
the words as they are actually spoken from the mouth, and the physical, tangible presence
of another human being.^66
A powerful clue to unlock this mystery known by all true messengers was given by
the words of Nephi, who sought for an understanding of things that he could not figure out
in his own mind through contemplation, prayer, and pondering. Nephi did not properly
understand anything his father Lehi was trying to teach him until he was taught by “the
Spirit of the Lord,” which he further described in this manner:
for I spake unto him as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was in the form
of a [real] man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit [according to the
fantasies of other mortals] of the Lord; and he spake unto me as a man speaketh
with another [human to human].^67Knowing the Mysteries of God in Full
The Book of Mormon was the ultimate source of hidden clues that could help anyone
interested to “know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.” Joseph knew all
the mysteries of God; nevertheless [he] was laid under a strict command that
[he should] not impart only according to the portion of his word [Christ’s]
which he doth grant unto the children of men, according to the heed and
diligence which they give unto him. And therefore, he that will harden his
heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not
harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is
given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full.
And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of
the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they
are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now
this is what is meant by the chains of hell.^68If a person does not understand the mysteries of God in full, then that person can
rest assured that he or she knows nothing concerning the real truth and is taken captive by
the devil and led by his will down to destruction. From the time that Joseph first returned
home on April 6, 1820; to the time he set for the legal implementation of the religion he was
commanded to suffer to be established according to the will of the people (exactly ten years
later); to the time he was killed (fourteen years later); to the time that his proclaimed
followers used his name and works to establish themselves as the most wealthy and
powerful (per capita) religion in the world...
...not one......not even one......has known the mysteries of God in full.
