(^50) A modern example of this is the case of former Presiding Bishop Glenn R. Pace. In July
1990, he sent a highly confidential letter to the First Presidency regarding his extensive study of
occult practices and ritualistic abuse within the Church. After the letter was made public by Jerald
and Sandra Tanner (Nov. 1991), the LDS Church sued them to prohibit their further publication of it.
Because of the widespread controversy that ensued after that letter was made publicly available, Pace
was promptly sent on a foreign mission (1992) to the Australia Sydney North Mission of the LDS
Church—presumably in order to restrict access to him. (Also of note, the LDS Temple Endowment
was also dramatically changed in April 1990, around the time of the Pace interviews [1989–90]). See

(^67) There are literally thousands of examples of the prejudiced attitude that those in the
LDS/Mormon Church hold against others, including blacks, women, and gays, among others. Only
some examples are offered below:
Wilford Woodruff records the following quote of Brigham Young in his journal: “Any
man having one drop of the seed of Cane in him Cannot hold the priesthood. ...I will say it now
in the name of Jesus Christ. I know it is true & they know it. The Negro cannot hold one particle
of Government. ...And if any man mingles his seed with the seed of Cane[,] the only way he
Could get rid of it or have salvation would be to Come forward & have his head Cut off and spill
his Blood upon the ground. It would also take the life of his Children.” (Woodruff, Wilford
Woodruff’s Journal, ed. Scott G. Kenney, 4:97, text as given.)
Jan. 5, 1852: Excerpt from Governor Brigham Young’s first address to the Utah Legislature:
“Thus while servitude may and should exist, and that too upon those who are naturally designed to
occupy the position of ‘servant of servants,’ yet we should not fall into the other extreme, and make
them as beasts of the field, regarding not the humanity which attaches to the colored race; nor yet
elevate them, as some seem disposed, to an equality with those whom Nature and Nature’s God
has indicated to be their masters, their superiors.” (“Governor’s Message to the Council and House
