Introduction

(^111) William Smith was in Philadelphia, PA at the time of Joseph Smith, Jr.’s death, serving as
Mission President to the Eastern States. He didn’t return to Nauvoo, Illinois until May 4, 1845. See

(^112) Two other children had passed away prior to this: Mary had passed away in 1832, before
the age of 3; Hyrum had passed away at age 7 in 1841.
(^113) John Taylor was already a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In 1880 he
became the third President of the LDS Church. Willard Richards was already a member of the
Quorum of Twelve Apostles. In 1847 he became Brigham Young’s Second Counselor in the First
Presidency. John S. Fullmer became a member of the Council of Fifty in 1845 and briefly served in the
Utah Territorial House of Representatives from Davis County. Stephen Markham had been a Colonel
in the Nauvoo Legion and in 1850 led an emigrating company from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Salt Lake
City, Utah. Starting in 1851, he became Branch President in Spanish Fork, Utah. Dan Jones became
Mission President in Wales from 1845–1848; he led a group of 300 from Wales to Salt Lake City, Utah
and served as mayor of Manti, Utah from 1851–1852. He served a second mission to Wales from
1852–1856, where he oversaw the translation of the Book of Mormon into the Welsh language.

Don Carlos, born June 13, 1840 and passed away Aug. 15, 1841 (see DHC, 4:402 and
Proctor, 450, n. 6);
Male child, stillborn in 1842 (Proctor, 450).
