thicken, portend a storm, especially with an East
wind or a hazy Sun.
Clouds with harsh, defined edges mean gusty days.
High clouds crossing in a different direction from low
ones indicates a change in bearing for the wind.
Heavy dew indicates dry weather to come.
If mist rises off the dew in the early morning, it means
a fine day is to come.
If there is heavy dew at the end of a Spring day, the
next day will be clear.
If there is fog in the morning, the afternoon will be
warm and clear.
A rainbow around the Moon is a sign of very harsh
weather soon to come.
If smoke from a chimney rises straight up into the air,
the day will be clear.

Austromancy (wind):

The best time for fishing is when the wind is coming
from the West or South.
The North wind brings cool, dry weather; the South
wind, warm and damp.

From the East comes the veering wind, blowing in the
same direction as the sun’s course. A veering wind
is purifying.
The West wind is called the backing wind because it
moves against the course of the sun. This wind is
supportive, erasing negativity and renewing confi-
dence. “May the wind be always at your back!”
(Irish blessing)
West winds are connected with Water and intuition.
North winds are associated with Earth and blessing or
support.
South winds bring Fire and energy.
East winds are symbolic of creativity.
Here is a little verse about the four seasonal winds:
Heed the North wind’s mighty gale;
Lock the door and drop the sail.
When the wind comes from the South,
Love will kiss thee on the mouth.
When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast.
When the West wind blows o’er thee,
Departed spirits restless be.

Ornithomancy (birds):

Seeing a bluebird in Spring foretells joy.
Seeing a red bird means that company will soon arrive.
A robin pecking on a window means a baby is about
to be conceived by someone inside.
If you hear an owl hoot three times, or see one flying
near you, it is time to check your behavior and
motivation.
Hissing geese, loud hens, crying peacocks, doves coo-
ing late in the evening, swallows flying low on the
water, and birds weaving “baskets” in the air are
all signs of coming rain.
Meeting a raven before a battle foretells victory.
A crow’s call from the West means a great wind is
soon to come.
