Tice’s latest photographic project, Ticetown,
traces the history of his Dutch ancestors who
came to the United States in 1663 and eventually
settled in New Jersey. A project that has consumed
his energies for almost a decade, this may be one of
Tice’s most personal. As he traces the generations
of his family’s history, he discovers the long-estab-
lished roots in the place he has photographed with
such intensity and sensitivity for years.
Not only does Tice spend a majority of his time as
a photographer and in the darkroom, but he has
also taught numerous workshops, including a mas-
ter class at New York’s New School for Social
Research and a fine print workshop at the Interna-
tional Center of Photography in New York. His
photographs are included in many prominent collec-
tions, including the Amon Carter Museum, Fort
Worth, Texas; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
Texas; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Whit-
ney Museum of American Art, New York.

Biography


Born in Newark, New Jersey, 13 October 1938. Joined the
Cateret, New Jersey Camera Club, 1952. Became a dark-
room assistant for a portrait studio in Newark, NJ, 1954.
Briefly studied commercial photography at Newark
Vocational and Technical High School, 1955. Served as
a photographer’s mate in the U.S. Navy, 1955–1960;
Served as a home portrait photographer, Americana Por-
traits Inc., West Orange, NJ, 1960–1969; First exhibit at
the Underground Gallery, New York, 1965; Helped to
establish the Lee Witkin Gallery in New York, 1968;
Instructor in Photography, New School for Social
Research, NY, beginning in 1970; First, major solo exhi-
bition,Paterson, New Jersey, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, 1972. Received National Endowment for the Arts
Photography Fellowship, 1973; John Simon Guggenheim
Memorial Fellowship, 1973; Grand Prix du Festival
d’Arles, France 1973; Commissioned to photograph
Saplo Island by the Field Museum of Natural History,
Chicago, 1974; Commissioned to photograph Liberty
Park for the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1979.
Commissioned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,
and the Parnassus Foundation to photograph North
American bank architecture for the exhibition and book
Money Matters: A Critical Look at Bank Architecture,
