Biography


Born in Kiev, Russia, September 4, 1912. Received bacca-
laureate from the Sorbonne, 1930. Studied painting with
Andre ́ Lhote, 1931. Studied architecture at the Ecole
Spe ́ciale and Ecole des Beaux-Arts, 1931–1932. Joins
staff atVu, 1933. Won medal for magazine design at
the Paris International Exhibition, 1937. Arrives in New
York as an exile and began work atVogue, 1941. Pro-
moted to art director ofVogue, 1943–1962. Became
executive director of all Conde ́Nast Publications, 1962.
Died Miami, Florida, November 19, 1999.
