should never give up. As Todd said, “ Through this experience with
Kimberly, I got to know one of the most beautiful people on earth.
She has a heart of gold that holds a lot of love! Thank you, Kim, for
showing me that I can overcome anything if I believe. ”
Although few of us have experienced the dramatic depths and
heights of healing that Kimberly has realized or the extreme near -
death hospitalizations that others and I have known, all of us have
symptomized emotional pain — whether we were conscious of it or
not. Becoming conscious of our thoughts, feelings, spiritual thirst,
and resulting physical health or disease responses provides signifi -
cant clues on this journey through life.
In our society, most of us were not effectively taught how to
handle negativity or the painful thoughts and emotions that occur
during our life experiences. In fact, the inverse is more often the
norm — we ’ ve been taught or unconsciously encouraged throughout
our lives to suppress or disconnect from our feelings. We ’ re told to
“ just get over it, ” “ no whining, ” “ buck up, ” or “ stop the drama. ” Many
of us learned from our society to ignore, deny, and intellectualize
our feelings, which can often thwart the natural process of healing.
Even those of us who have healed from diseases that we know were
emotionally rooted and fueled still catch ourselves unintentionally
passing these unhealthful messages on to our children, in an inef-
fective attempt to process through unpleasant feelings faster. But
pain and disease are just as much a part of our life ’ s experience as
are joy and health. Pain and disease are the body ’ s way of commu-
nicating and letting us know that something needs our attention. So
rather than judge and discount our pain, whether it be emotional
or physical, we can choose to consider it a teacher, a loving instruc-
tor pointing us to an alignment of physical, mental, emotional, and
spiritual health.
