Introduction
Successful reading
In order to read well, pupils need to orchestrate a range of skills from basic
decoding through to inference, deduction and being aware of the writer’s purpose
and how that affects the choices they made.
Successful readers:
- are confident in what they are doing and know how they should approach and
read a text; - recognise that texts are about much more than the words on the page;
- predict what will happen next;
- ask questions of the text;
- make links with other texts they have read both within and across various
media; - are able to relate what they read to their experience;
- pass judgements;
- evaluate text for veracity and usefulness.
