Module 62 : Radicals
RADICALS
- Radical
The symbol ‘ ’ indicates the square root of a number following the sign. In general,
the nth root of ‘r’ is written as nr and the symbol ‘n’ is known as the radical sign
where ‘n’ is the order of the surd and ‘r’ is the radicand and can also be written as
r1/n. The idea needs verbal explanation, in addition to the provision of relevant text
material in Braille for the child to understand. - Square number
A number is said to be a square number if it can be expressed as the product of two
equal numbers. A square number is also called as a perfect square.
Eg. : 4 = 2 ×^2 Also, 4 = (-2)(-2)
16 = 4 ×^4 Also, 16 = (-4)(-4)
144 = 12 ×^12 Also, 144 = (-12)(-12)
Since a square number can be expressed as the product of two pairs of equal numbers,
that is, one positive and the other negative, any square number will be having two
square roots of the same magnitude but different in sign.
The idea may be explained to the child orally.
