RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM
- Rectangular coordinate system
The system of representation of points in the plane by ordered pair of numbers is
called the rectangular or Cartesian or xy - coordinate system. The two axes are called
rectangular or coordinate axes.
An embossed diagram depicting all the aspects of the rectangular system may be
provided to the child to understand the idea.
- Quadrant
The term ‘Quadrant’ literally represents each of four parts of a circle, plane etc.,
divided by two lines or planes at right angles.
A plane can be divided into four quadrants by a pair of mutually perpendicular lines.
The horizontal line is called the X- axis and the vertical line is called the Y- axis.
The meeting point of the two axes is the origin denoted as ‘O’.
