MUTUALAPPLICATION
A mutual application (applying) occurs when two planets are moving toward each
other—one in direct motion and the other in retrograde motion—to form an aspect.MUTUALRECEPTION
Two planets are in mutual reception when they are in each other’s signs. If in a given
horoscope, for example Mercury is in Aries (which is ruled by Mars) and Mars is in
Gemini (which is ruled by Mercury), then Mercury and Mars are in mutual reception.
Astrologers interpret mutual reception as being equivalent to a conjunction between
the two planets involved.MYSTICRECTANGLE
Mystic rectangle is a modern term for a planetary configuration composed of two
trines that are connected by two sextiles. To qualify as a mystic rectangle, the pairs of
planets on opposite sides of the horoscope from each other must form oppositions.
Despite the name, individuals with mystic rectangles in their natal charts need not be
mystically inclined. The name seems to have originated with Madame Helena
Blavatsky, one of the founders of the Theosophical Society, who had this configura-
