SATURNINE

There are many common terms and expressions that originate in the science of the

stars. Saturn rules, among other matters, sour and depressed dispositions. Hence,

someone with a dour, melancholy temperament is sometimes called saturnine.

SCALES

The Scales is a popular alternate term for the sign Libra.

SCHEMA

Schema (scheme) is an older, medieval term for a horoscope.

SCHERMER, BARBARA

Barbara Schermer has maintained a vigorous astrological counseling practice in

Chicago since 1974 and is known as an advocate and pioneer in the field of experien-

tial astrology. She is the author of Astrology Alive: A Guide to Experiential Astrology and

the Healing Arts,in which she passionately advocates a holistic, soul-centered (as

opposed to prediction-centered) astrology. She has extensive experience as a holistic

practitioner integrating archetypal and Jungian psychology, mythology, kriya yoga,

flower essences, alchemy, dreams and the arts in her work.

Schermer is an internationally known speaker, having presented at many con-

ferences in the United States, Canada, England, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Aus-

tralia, and the Netherlands. She has served as the Media Watch chairman and adviso-

ry board member of the Association for Astrological Networking (AFAN), for the

board of Kepler College in Seattle, and was twice nominated for the prestigious Regu-

lus award for her contribution to astrology.

She offers a nine-month experiential astrology apprenticeship training in

Chicago, mentors astrology students, and for years has been a volunteer teacher for

the adult education programs at Francis Parker High School in Chicago and the

Chicago Waldorf schools in support of their scholarship funds.
