This exercise incorporates all of these techniques into one simple painting. The subject is a single

oak tree on a grassy hill on a bright summer's day. Use the following pastel colors: dark blue, mid-

blue, and pale blue; dark green, mid-green, and pale green; bright yellow; dark brown; and a

charcoal stick.

Draw the tree shape, the hill, and the fence posts in charcoal or soft pastel pencil onto a sanded card.

Use the flat side of all of the pastel colors to block in the painting.
