Sofar,inallthestructuralsystemswehaveconsidered,virtualworkhasbeenproducedbyactualforces
movingthroughimposedvirtualdisplacements.However,theactualforcesarenotrelatedtothevirtual
displacementsinanyway,since,aswehaveseen,themagnitudesanddirectionsoftheactualforcesare
unchangedbythevirtualdisplacementssolongasthedisplacementsaresmall.Thus,theprincipleof
virtualworkappliesforanysetofforcesinequilibriumandanysetofdisplacements.Equally,therefore,
wecouldspecifythattheforcesareasetofvirtualforcesinequilibriumandthatthedisplacementsare
