Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

I am a giver. That’s what I think about myself.

What event or series of events led to your discovery?

When I was a very young girl, we used to have big birthday parties. I
always thought, “What a waste, all of these kids coming to a birthday
party.” Even as a kid I was already wired for success, and my birthday
always came in the winter. In Calcutta, it was really cold in the winter
and there were lots of poor people. I asked my grandfather, “Why are
there so many poor people?” My grandfather said, “If you’re so concerned
about them, from now on, we’ll take your birthday gift money, buy
blankets for these poor people, and give them blankets on your birthday.”
Since I was the oldest child, I was more pampered than my
siblings. When it came time for my birthday, there were quite a lot of
blankets to hand out to the poor people. The driver drove us into the
neighborhood and we saw all the people on the street, so we pulled over
and gave them all blankets. That night I had the most satisfying feeling
inside that I could ever imagine. I realized that although having parties
and receiving jewelry was fun, it was certainly not satisfying. I would
rather do something for those less fortunate, who have so little. I thought
giving would be the most wonderful feeling and the most satisfying to
me. And it was.

If you can give advice to those who are still searching for their life’s
purpose, what would it be?

First you have to know yourself. I think most of the time people are
trying to find out about what other people are doing, and they don’t look
at themselves. If you start finding out who you are and what you want in
life, I think you would find you purpose. I think that 80% of the time,
most people are worried about what he looks like, or what she is doing
right or wrong, or if he or she tells lies, or if they’d take money. But they
are not looking at what they, themselves, are doing.
In a quiet moment you may think, what do I want to be, what do
I want? Even if you wanted to smoke a cigarette, if that’s what gives you
the most pleasure or calming thoughts, then you should do it. In those
calm pleasurable moments I believe you will find your purpose and what
you came to this life to do.
