in our activism; a vision then comes to us of our place as planetary citizens.
We are pulled by our passion for such a long time, we fail to realize that
we are living out the definition of our names.
For instance, my name, Lawrence Edward Carter, three British
names: Lawrence means “poetic prophet,” Edward means “the guardian
of the treasures,” and a Carter is the person who carts things around...like
a coolie who pulls passengers through a city in the Orient. I am the
poetic prophet who is guarding the treasures and who carts souls into
heaven, an awareness that heaven is within you as ever-expanding good.
Just doing what you enjoy doing, what makes you happy, what
fulfills you is one way of discovering your purpose. Your destiny, I believe,
is written in the meaning of your name. It is engraved in your heart and
it will not pass away until you fulfill it. I believe I’m fulfilling my destiny
here at Morehouse College, helping thousands of young men, particularly
those interested in the ministry.
When I was about fifteen I promised that I would send hundreds
of young men and women into the Christian ministry and it has happened.
I have sent hundreds to seminaries, schools of divinity, and schools of
theology, many of whom have graduated with their Ph.D.s from the
leading research universities, some of whom studied abroad. This will
be my legacy to Morehouse College. These young people will be the
future drum majors of justice and peace, helping us grow up into
democracy’s crown.
