Farm Animal Metabolism and Nutrition

animal’s ability to maximize feed intake.
Feed should be available when cows desire
to eat, e.g. at sunrise or after milking.
Adequate bunk or manger space for adult
and growing cattle helps to ensure that
feeding behaviour and total feed intake are
optimized.
Feeding behaviour has a tremendous
impact on dry matter intake. Feeding

behaviour and dry matter intake are
controlled by gut fill and chemostatic
mechanisms and modulated by feeding
management and factors such as environ-
ment, health and social interactions. These
factors that modulate feeding behaviour
and intake can be optimized to promote
intense feeding behaviour and maximum
feed intake in dairy cattle.
