The Board of Regents of the New York State Department of Education requires that middle

and high school students take skills and content assessment tests in different subject areas

designed to measure whether they are achieving the state’s academic standards. In order

to earn a diploma, students must pass examinations in algebra, geometry, earth science,

biology, english, foreign language, global history and geography, and U.S. history and

government. The test questions are written by teams of teachers. Sample middle and high
