Middle school teacher Larry Klein and his students maintain four Web sites for use by his so-
cial studies classes. All the sites are free to teachers and easily accessible by parents. Larry
uses a site on TeacherWeb.com (TeacherWeb.com/NY/168/Klein/index.html) to post an-
nouncements, homework assignments, a class calendar, and answers to frequently asked
questions. It also contains a number of study links. This Web site is updated daily by stu-
dents from Larry’s ninth-grade classes who have the class password.
Larry has a WWW.Geocities.Com (WWW.Geocities.com/jhs168q) site that includes class
rules, a joke page, information for parents, fun and educational links, and a list of “useless”
social studies facts.
WWW.Think.Com is a secure Web space that allows students to develop and post Web-
based multimedia projects. Each student has her or his own password that permits her or
him to enter, view, and change material on her or his site. As the teacher, Larry is listed as
site manager and has access to every student’s page. The site also allows students to dia-
logue on controversial or interesting questions.
Larry is also responsible for maintaining the school’s Web page at WWW.Parsons168.com.
This is a much more formal site that has letters addressed to students and parents, explana-
tions of state learning standards and assessments, and copies of trip permission slips.
