If there is an explosive person in your life, one or both of you may
need help. Fortunately, treatment for psychological malaise is abundant
in our society. Unfortunately, the quality is not uniformly high. Worse, the
delivery system is completely disconnected; one component often has no
idea what the other is doing because each believes it’s doing what’s most
important. The kind of help you get will often depend as much upon
where you go as on what you need.
The following are some ideas, based on more than 30 years experi-
ence in hospitals, crisis clinics, commitment facilities, mental health cen-
ters, and private practice, about where to find help and how to evaluate it.
Not everyone will agree with my generalizations, but in mental health,
who agrees? Let the buyer beware.
