If an explosive person’s company has an EAP program, or if yours does,
make the call. EAP programs are especially good with substance abuse. They
sometimes offer very short-term mental health treatment as well. Most EAPs
are totally confidential; they give no information to employers. If you have
any concerns about what will be shared, ask at the beginning of the call.
Insurance Companies
Believe it or not, your insurance company can help you out in an emergency.
If, on the back or bottom of your card, there is an 800 number to call for
mental health precertification, the person you eventually talk to will have
some knowledge of mental health treatment in your area and which
providers and facilities are covered by your plan. The person you talk to will
usually have some training in triage, and can offer advice as to what level
of care is most appropriate. In many plans, a call is essential to authorize
payment for any form of mental health treatment.
If the situation does not warrant 911, and there is a mental health
number on an explosive person’s insurance card, always call it as soon as
possible. If you don’t, there may be a large, out-of-pocket expense. Do not
make the mistake of believing that a referral from your primary care physi-
cian will ensure coverage!
Inpatient Treatment
Psychiatric Hospitals
Psychiatric hospitals used to offer extended treatment. People could go in
sick, stay in tranquil surroundings, and come out well. At least in theory.
Psychiatric hospitals are now used for short-term stabilization, usually
less than a week, or for long-term placement of people who cannot function
in any other setting. There is little in between. I don’t recommend hospi-
talization for any of the disorders in this book. Though there are some
excellent short-term facilities, most do not provide much for nonpsychotic
disorders beyond keeping people safe and starting them on medication. If
a depressed person is actively suicidal or completely unable to function,
or a fearful person is in a state of continuous panic, there may be no other
place to go. For anyone else, think twice, and three times; you may be
starting them on a very bad habit.
