from the air and is up to 30 per
cent lighter than most materials used
in cars. The dashboard trims are made
from ethically sourced eucalyptus that
requires less surface processing than
other types of wood, and the leather
panels are tanned with olive leaf
extract. In fact, over 80 per cent of
what you can see inside the i3 is
made from recycled materials or
renewable resources.

THE
WINNING
EDGE
As if that’s not enough to radiate
smugness, wait until you put your foot
down and feel the i3’s speedy
acceleration rate and dexterous
handling, which BMW claims you
can enjoy for up to 260km without
having to recharge.

NISSAN LEAF
THE OG EV is back. City-friendly, tech-
heavy and highly practical, the Nissan
Leaf is the world’s most adored electric
vehicle and has been since 2010. This
year, the Leaf has had a sporty-luxe
makeover – earning more battery power,
more kilometres (claimed range is 270km)
and stacks of intelligent driver-assistance
systems and techy comforts usually
reserved for more spenny
models. This includes ride control
for bumpy roads, individual
wheel braking for clever
cornering, Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto, a seven-speaker
Bose sound system, voice
recognition and heated seats –
all wrapped up in an aerodynamic
Stormtrooper-like body proudly
stamped with a “zero emissions”
badge. If that’s not enough,
the Leaf has what’s called bi-directional
charging capabilities, so the car can act as
a power source itself.

THE
WINNING
EDGE
Addressing concerns around lithium-ion
battery disposal, Nissan has an initiative in
place for recycling or repurposing Leaf
batteries that have aged or been rendered
as scrap after being involved in an
accident. Instead of becoming landfill, the
batteries and their cells can get a second
life powering homes and street lights,
going on off-grid adventures or helping
remote communities in need. >
