generationtoseeinmymovies.Ihaveasonwhoistwoand
I wanthimtogrowupseeingmeplaystrongroles.Peopleask,

beinspired,too.Theyneedtoseeempoweredwomeninrolesso
wegettoa pointwherethat’snormal.Because it is in real life.
Doesthatimpactthewayyouraisehim?
Yes. It’s such an important conversation we
should be havingwith youngmen now.I’m
goingtoteachhimaboutconsent,andthatjust
becausehe’sa man,hedoesn’thaveanymore
power than a woman or any other human
being.Withanychild,youneedtoraisethemto
berespectful,tobeempathetic.Tobewhohe
wantstobe,buttoalwayshavekeymorals,like
I grewupwith.[What]mymumpassed on to
me[is]whatI wanttopassontohim.
Are youinvolved in anyorganisations that
advocateforwomen’srights?
I havea groupI seeeverytwoweekswhenI’m
in London. It’s a bunch of women who get
togetherand[discuss]feminism,andwejusttalk
about our lives and how we see ourselves
progressing.Wealsouseit asacreative-writing
tool. We get women together to write their
storiesaspoetry that theyfeellike theycan
express their feelings through. And that’s
somethingI reallylove.Wedon’thaveaname
yet.We’restillbuildingit up,buthopefully it will
becomesomethingthat’swidespread.
Howdoyouchooseyourroles?
It’s interesting... WithMazeRunner, I wasn’t
allowedtoreadthescript beforeI said yes.
Ihadtokindofcommitbeforeknowingwhatit
was.ButI wasluckyenoughthat[it]hadahuge
fanbase,soI knew itresonatedwith young
people.Andthat’sreally wonderfulbecause
oftenyouspendsomuchtimebuildingcharacters
forhugeproductionsthatdon’treallyhavethefanbase.Andit’s
nicetoknowthat,withMazeRunnerandPirates, theywerethere.
Theywantedtoseethemoviesandalreadylovedthecharacters.
Who’sthemostcomplexcharacteryou’veplayed?
ProbablyEffy.BecauseI hadtimewithher,whichisa realgiftas
anactor,tobeabletofollowa characterthroughforfouryears.
It’swonderfultohavethattimewithher,towatchherevolvefrom
beingtheyoungersisterinthefirstgeneration,inthefirstcoupleof
series, and kind of taking over in the second generation and

becomingherownspiritandworkingoutherownmind.It was
alsothefirstcharacterI playedwherewedealtwithmentalillness,
whichwasimportanttome.It waswonderfultogettoexperience
thatwithherandtointroduceit intoyoungpeople’slives–that
it’sokaytotalkaboutit [because]it’ssomethingalotofyoung
peopledealwith.It’sbravetohavea leadingcharacterlike that.
What’sthehardestroleyou’vehadtoplaysofar?
ForthejobI’mdoingatthemoment[NetflixseriesSpinningOut],
! havetobea figureskater,andI couldn’tstandupinskatesuntil
a monthago.Sothephysicalityofthathasbeentough.I’mlearning
a sport at the sametimeasbuildinga character,thentryingtoput
themtogetherinthesamemoment.I nowhave
a profoundrespectforfigureskaters,because
it’sincrediblychallenging,incrediblyphysical.
They’re so strong, and just the idea of
competingconstantly,it’spsychologicallyso
intense.Soit’sbeenthehardestonesofar.
Is your Cartier partnership the first time
you’veteamedupwitha brand?
Yes.I’vealwaysmodelledandthingslikethat,
butthisis thefirsttimeI’vereallyjoinedupwith
abrand. Theyreally wanttocelebratemy
Brazilianside,whichisveryspecialforme.
I’venevergottodothatpubliclybefore.I feel
liketheyreallyunderstandI havethesetwo
sides:myBritishandmyBrazilianside.I have
myactresssideandI alsohavemyKayaside.

That’s going tohaunt me forever. It’s true.
Havinganimmigrantmother, andamother
withadifferentaccent,it wasinspiringtosee
a moviestarwhohada strongaccent,andwho
hademigratedtoAmerica,madesomethingofhislifeandbuilt
acareer –threehuge, successfulcareers!Asachild,itwas
interestingtoseesomeonewhodidn’tsound like everyone else.
