Make a fun floral Mother’s Day card
O
laf Falafel is a children’s author, illustrator,
dad of two daughters, and a comedian. During
the first lockdown, he created an online Art Club
(tinyurl.com/TWJ-olafart). Each episode was filled
with jokes, useful drawing tips, funny animations and
stupid jokes. Now, every month he shares some of his
favourite artists and shows you some simple ways to
recreate their style. Over to you, Olaf...
“It’s Mother’s Day coming up and I usually
make my mum a Mother’s Day card and buy her a big
bunch of flowers. This got me thinking about the
artist Georgia O’Keeffe, who is probably one of the
most famous painters of flowers ever.
“O’Keeffe was born in Wisconsin, US, and
was inspired by many artists, including the
sculptor Auguste Rodin and the painter Henri
Matisse. After the Second World War
(1939–1945), she moved to New Mexico,
where the beautiful surroundings sparked her
fascination with painting flowers.
“She created huge close-up images of
the insides of flowers – the bright colours,
textures and petal shapes had an almost
abstract (art that doesn’t try to accurately
represent a subject) quality. I thought it
would be a great idea to make a floral
Mother’s Day card in honour of Georgia
O’Keeffe but give it a silly Olaf Falafel twist

  • why not give it a go yourself?”

1

Get everything together and fold
your coloured card in half. 2

Take a square of tissue paper
and fold it diagonally in half. 4

Cut a curvy line like this. You get
a flower shape when it’s open.

5

Repeat steps 3–5 with a smaller,
different coloured square. 6

Use coloured pens or paint to
add details to the flowers. 7

Stick your flowers to the card
and add the googly eyes. 8

Finish by adding eyebrows and
a great big smile!

3

Fold it diagonally three more
times so it looks like this.
