STEP FOUR
I considerthepositionoftheemergingsun,whichwill
throwimportantlightonobjectsinthepainting,andalso
dictateshadows.It is helpfultodrawa littlecircle(onthe
boardbesidetheartwork)toremindmeofthesun’s
position– at thetopleftinthispainting.I usea kneadable
erasertocleanoffanypastelthatwentbelowthehorizon
lineduringblending;thendrawa distanttreelinewitha
dark,cool-colouredpastelpencilorpastelstick.
I quicklyandlightlysketch(withpastelpencil)
approximatelinesforplantsandshadowsontheground.
Usingthebasicrulesofaerialperspective,I blockin
groundcoloursincludingplantandshadowareas(dark
purple/bluesaregoodforshadowareas).I usedarker,
warmercoloursintheforeground,withcoolerandlighter
coloursinthebackground.I roughlyblendif necessary;
nottoosmoothbecausethetextureofthegroundis rough.
PatchesoftheColourfixpapershowingthroughlooklike
lightflecksonthegroundandhelpwithunityinthe
artwork...becausecoloursfromtheskyarealsoonthe
ground.
Thebasicstructureofthepaintingis nowestablished,so
I sprayit withfixative.
STEP FIVE
Rememberingthepositionofthesun,I addhighlightson
backgroundtrees.Usingpastelpencil,I drawlinesinfront
ofa fewsectionsofthetreelinetoindicatetrunks;making
someofthemcreamorlightgreytoindicatethattheyare
sunlit.I blockinforegroundandmiddlegroundbushes
withdarkandmid-tonepastels,againconsideringlighting;
andblendingif necessary.I adda fewhorizontalstreaksof
mutedyellowstoindicatewildflowersinthebackground.
Usinga darkgreyorbrownpastelpencil,I drawthemain
trunksandbranchesofWattletrees.
