Figure 8.15 Getting started with replication to Azure
Following are the high-level steps required to set up replication from Hyper-V to
Azure by using SCVMM:
1 . A new source for replication is added to the recovery vault by adding the VMM
server. On the VMM server, you run the ASR setup and provide the credential file
generated by the ASR portal. In VMM under Settings, it will now show you as
registered to an ASR instance, and clouds can be configured to show in ASR.
2 . A target for the replication is selected, which will be Azure, and a check performed
to ensure that there is at least one compatible storage account and virtual network.
3 . A policy is associated with the VMM server that set the replication details, such as
frequency of replication and number of recovery points to keep.
4 . The VM(s) to be replicated are selected from those in ASR-enabled SCVMM clouds.
5 . The initial replication will be triggered, and then the VM will be replicated per the
policy.
The process to protect ESX and physical machines is similar, except you also require a
separate OS instance that will provide the process server/configuration on-premises
component to receive the writes from the Mobility Service running inside the guests.
