■Predinsone for severe cases
■Immunosuppressives may be used for recurrent or chronic, severe
disease.

complications and prognosis
■Good – Spontaneous resolution often occurs
■Usually runs course in 3 to 6 weeks
■Resolves without atrophy or scarring
■Chronic lesions should suggest alternative diagnosis.
■When using KI, must monitor for induction of hypothyroidism

History
■increasing incidence in recent years
■adenocarcinoma and squamous carcinoma comprised more than
90% of cases (adenocarcinoma is more common than squamous)
■benign tumors rare
➣common types: fibrovascular polyp, lipoma, granular cell tumor,
leiomyoma

Signs & Symptoms
■asymptomatic until advanced
■dysphagia typically progress from solids to solids and liquids
■anemia
■cough from tracheobronchial fistulas
■weight loss

tests
■barium esophagogram
➣confirm presence and extent of tumor
■endoscopy
➣localize and biopsy for pathology
■endoscopic ultrasonography and CT scan
➣determine local and distant staging, respectively
