Canon EOS 250D
Price: £529 / $549
As the world’s lightest DSLR with a moveable screen, the Canon EOS 250D
is a travel-friendly camera, but should it feature in your kit?
Canon lists the EOS 250D as
one of its DSLRs for beginners.
However, it has a bit more to entice
photographers than the EOS 4000D and
2000D. The screen on the back of the camera,
for example, is mounted on a vari-angle hinge
so it can be twisted into position to provide
a clear view in any orientation. Vloggers and
selfie lovers will also like that the screen can
be swivelled round for viewing from in front
of the camera. In addition, it’s touch-sensitive,
which makes navigating the menu and
adjusting settings much more intuitive.
Inside the camera, there’s a 24.1MP APS-C
format sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8
processing engine. That’s a popular sensor
size and resolution, matching those seen in
cameras such as the Sony A6400 and Canon
EOS M50, but unlike them the 250D isn’t
mirrorless, it’s a DSLR.
That DSLR design means that the 250D
has two autofocus (AF) systems. One is for
when the viewfinder is being used to compose
images, while the other is for when Live View
is activated and images are composed on the
screen on the back of the camera.
“ It’s capable of focussing on and keeping
up with quite fast-moving subjects”
When the viewfinder is used, there are
nine phase-detection AF points available for
selection. This means that you may have to
focus and recompose with still subjects and
compromise on the framing with moving
subjects, then crop the image to improve the
composition. However, the focussing system
is very effective, and even with the EF-S 18-
55mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM kit lens it’s capable of
focussing on and keeping up with quite fast-
moving subjects. It also copes well with very
low light, especially if you use the central point,
which is the most sensitive.
If you switch to using the screen to
compose images, there are 3,975 selectable
points that cover up to 88% of the width and
100% of the height of the sensor. You can also
select the point you want to use to focus with
