Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY)
has completed its fourth competition
cycle, showcasing some of the best bird
photography from around the world. It
attracts photographers from over 60
countries, as shown by the diverse species
and photographic styles represented in the
winning images on display here.
The competition boasts an expert panel
of judges headed by Chris Packham, who
says, “Winning this competition is getting
harder. We’ve had more entries from more
photographers and more countries than
before, and critically we are very excited
that we have a female winner. Yes! Yes!
Yes! BPOTY is not only keeping up with the
technology, it’s keeping up with the times.”
With over 13,500 images submitted, it
was going to take a truly impressive image
to win the overall Bird Photographer of
the Year 2019 title, but that is just what
Caron Steele from the UK managed with
this fabulous image of a Dalmatian pelican,
taken at Lake Kerkini in Greece. BPOTY
director and competition organiser Rob
Read comments, “Caron’s pelican had me
leaping from my chair with joy the moment
I saw it appear on my computer screen.
Everything about this image is right, it is
truly delightful in its near-perfection.”
If you would like to enter the next
competition for a chance to become Bird
Photographer of the Year 2020, then it is
now open for entries until 30 November
- “We have some new awards for 2020,
including a Black and White category and
a photo-journalism conservation award,”
says Rob Read. With a prize value of over
£20,000, including a top prize of £5,000
cash, Swarovski binoculars, an Olympus
camera system, Gitzo tripod heads and VIP
accounts from Alamy, there’s plenty to win.
BPOTY is more than just a competition
- the organisers have developed a new
website aimed at developing a community
around the competition. Promoting bird
photography and the photographers,
and raising money and awareness for
conservation projects around the world, are
principles at the core of BPOTY. For more
