Choose a
destination folder
This is where you can
choose the place on your
hard drive or external hard
drive that you want to save
your images to. Tick the
Into Subfolder option and
type in the folder name
if you want to keep each
import nicely organised.

3

Set the preview
quality In the File
Handling panel on the
right you can set the Build
Preview, which adjusts the
quality of the preview you
get in the Library module
when you’re sorting your
images. Smaller previews
will help Lightroom load the
previews faster and increase
Lightroom’s performance.

6

Apply an edit on import
Go to the Apply During
Import panel on the right and
choose Develop Settings if you
want to apply a basic edit on
import. Use the Metadata option
to add in metadata like copyright
information, and also add keywords
to any of the ticked images you
import to save you from doing this
in the Library module later.

you why you should spend a few moments
perfecting the settings, as it can save a lot of
time in the long run – especially if you save
the key settings as a new preset.
To begin importing your shots, open up
Lightroom Classic CC and head over to the
Library module, then click on the Import
button towards the bottom left of the interface,

or go to File>Import Photos and Videos. In the
Import dialogue that appears you can change
the view mode to Grid with G or Loupe with E,
sort files by capture time, file name or file type,
and also adjust the size of the thumbnails
in the folder you’ve selected using the
Thumbnails slider or with Ctrl/Cmd+Plus or
Minus. Any image in the main import screen

with a tick next to it will be imported, while any
images that don’t won’t be. You can use the
Check All and Uncheck All buttons to select or
unselect your shots quickly.
There’s loads more functionality that
we’re going to take a closer look at now. The
dialogue can look a bit daunting so we’ll break
it down and explain what it all means.

8

Finish the import
When you’re happy with
all of the settings, all that’s
left is to press the Import
button in the bottom right
corner. Click the None button
at the bottom if you want to
save your settings as a preset
to cut down import time at a
later date. Back in the Library
module you’ll see an import
progress bar appear in the
top left.
