Canon EOS RP
The EOS RP is more or less a mirrorless version
of the 6D Mk II DSLR, but it feels a little ‘less’
The Canon 6D Mk II is an ideal full-frame
DSLR for enthusiast photographers. It’s
much improved from the original, with
fancier features, a vari-angle touchscreen
and a much better autofocus system
for both viewfinder-based and live view
shooting. For the latter, it’s typical of most
current Canon cameras in having a Dual
Pixel AF CMOS image sensor, which enables
phase-detection autofocus across 80 per
cent of the image frame. The exact same
image sensor is adopted by the mirrorless
EOS RP, although it’s coupled to a DIGIC 8
processor, which is a generation newer.
The RP is significantly downsized
compared to the 6D Mk II and feels a little
lacking in enthusiast-grade features and
controls. Buttons and dials for quickly
accessing important shooting settings are
very thin on the ground, and there’s no info
screen on the top panel. The net result is
that the RP feels more like a beginner’s
camera, with a heavy reliance on the vari-
angle touchscreen and its quick menu for
dialling in creative settings. At least the
quick menu is pretty speedy and intuitive.
A more unfortunate area of downsizing is
the viewfinder: the RP is the only camera
in this group with a 0.39-inch rather than
a larger 0.5-inch electronic viewfinder.
The viewing image is therefore physically
smaller, and the pixel count is lower at 2.36
million dots compared with 3.69 million in
the other cameras.
Even the battery is relatively small and
only enables 250 shots from a full charge.
The maximum burst rate of 5fps is also the
slowest in the group, and drops to 4fps with
continuous autofocus. Meanwhile, 4K movie
capture is hamstrung by Dual Pixel AF
becoming unavailable, so you can only use
the inferior contrast-detection autofocus. x2 © Matthew Richards
