How do I get a
copy of the latest
version of DPP 4?
Dennis Crutchley, West
Sussex

BRIAN SAYS... You need
to download the full
version of the software
from Canon. Go to:
https://www.canon.
co.uk/support, type in
your camera model, then
click the link to check for
downloads of DPP. There’s
an updater and a full
version. You need your
camera serial number to
download the full version,
which can be updated to
the latest version.

What software
will cut down
reflections on
glass and water
in my images?
Trevor Styles, Chorley

BRIAN SAYS... Yo u c a n
darken an image like a
polarizer might, but
reducing glare and
reflections is not possible
The polarizer cuts
reflections by reducing
light from specific
directions, this is all but
impossible to do once the
image has been captured.

What is the
difference
between Raw and
CRAW format
images with the
EOS 250D?
Robin Forrester, Stirling

BRIAN SAYS... There’s
little information about
CRAW, except that it is a
compressed version of
Raw. Visible differences in
shot aren’t obvious, and
you get up to 50% more
images with CRAW.

If I press a button the display on my

Speedlite 430EX III-RT illuminates, can it
be set to stay turned on?
Richard Gibson, Brackley

BRIAN SAYS... The default configuration of the 430EX
III-RT can be tweaked with the custom and personal
functions. This can be done on the flash, but most modern
EOS cameras will let you change flash custom functions
from the camera menus. The custom function that controls
how the display is illuminated is 22. The display illuminates
for 12 seconds when you press a button or turn the dial – if
you change C.Fn 22 to 2, the display will stay lit. This same
capability, and custom function is available on the Speedlite
600EX-RT and Speedlite 600EX II-RT flashes too.

Custom function 22 controls Speedlite LCD display illumination;
setting it to 2 keeps the light switched on

Can you use a variable

ND filter for stills? They
seem popular amongst

videographers.
Ed Small, Luton

BRIAN SAYS... Variable ND filters are
created by sandwiching a pair of
polarizing filters, then rotating one of
the pair to create the darkening effect.
You could use it for stills, but flare can
be a problem with long exposures and
with bright lights, plus at some point
close to max density you often see a
cross appear as the two polarizing
layers interact. It’s cheaper to get a few
different plain ND filters for still use.

Variable ND filters can have cross artefacts
at max density, and flare is more likely

Larger pixels are helpful for low-light shots,
like this crocodile captured at ISO 6400

What does the Image Transfer

U t ili t y ( I T U ) do w hen I plug in m y ne w
EOS RP to the computer?
Phoebe Granger, Betws-y-Coed

BRIAN SAYS... ITU is available for more recent models
of cameras, including your EOS RP, EOS R, M50, and
250D. The software is designed to transfer the images
from your camera to your computer when the camera
and computer are on the same network.
When you arrive home from a shoot, turning on the
camera wakes the computer with ITU and new images
are uploaded automatically to your computer. You’ll
need to do the setup of the software with the camera
before you go out, and the
computer needs to be left
on. You can limit the
upload to your choice of
file types, and selected
starred images if needed.
Using the utility will drain
your camera battery too.

What is the pixel pitch
of an EOS 2000D?
Pete Stockton, vie email

BRIAN SAYS... The pixel pitch of a
camera is not one of the standard
specs provided by Canon. You can
calculate the pixel pitch with sufficient
accuracy for comparison. You need the
sensor dimensions and the number of
pixels. For your EOS 2000D, the sensor
is 22.3x14.9mm with a 6000x4000px
resolution. Dividing the pixel count by
the dimensions, gives a pixel size of
about 3.72x3.72μm. EOS R pixels are
larger at 5.36x5.36μm.
