running since 1954, when the first film,
simply titled Godzilla, was released. - That first film was inspired by the earlier
theatrical success of King Kong, which
originally came out in 1933 but has been re-
released as recently as 1952. - Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a direct
sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, which was
directed by Gareth Edwards of Rogue One: A
Star Wars Story fame. - Although Edwards has been replaced in
the director’s chair by Michael Dougherty for
King of the Monsters, Sally Hawkins reprises
her on-screen role from the earlier film. - Appropriately, the sequel to King of the
Monsters is set to be Godzilla vs. Kong, as
Godzilla and King Kong will clash in this
movie scheduled for a March 13, 2020 release.
