and Victoria Azarenka as the only
female singles players to have won
back-to-back tournaments at
Indian Wells and Miami.
This marks her ascent to the
top of the world rankings in some
style. Swiatek discovered on the
eve of her Miami campaign that
she had effectively become the
No 1 when Australia’s Ashleigh
Barty announced her retire-
ment from the sport at the age of
25, and has backed up her new-
found status on the court.
Swiatek, who won the French Open
in 2020, has now claimed 17 consecutive
wins, including her triumph at the
Qatar Open in February. Considering
the new pressure on her, it is remark-
able that she did not drop a set in her six
matches en route to the title.
“These weeks were so intense,”
Swiatek said. “I didn’t really know if I
would able to keep up with the streak
that I have.
“It’s amazing for me that I could show
mental toughness because my whole
life I thought I could do more and
sometimes I was losing and I didn’t
even know why. This season I feel like
everything clicked so it’s great and I am
really happy.”
Meanwhile, Jack Draper continued
his impressive run of form by winning
his fourth second-tier ATP Challenger
title in 2022. The 20-year-old Briton
will rise to a new career-high world
ranking of No 124 after defeating
Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the
Saint-Brieuc Open.
Remember the name, Carlos Alcaraz.
The 18-year-old Spaniard capped a
momentous two weeks in his fledgling
career by becoming the youngest male
champion in the history of the Miami
Open.
This is a significant breakthrough for a
player who is considered a future world
No 1 and grand-slam champion. With
exceptional composure he recovered
from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to defeat
Casper Ruud, the world No 8 from
Norway, 7-5, 6-4 in last night’s final.
While Alcaraz will now rise five spots
to No 11 in the world rankings, a better
measure of his present level of play
comes in the ATP race based on
results this year alone. With 18 wins
in 20 matches, he sits in second posi-
tion behind the Australian Open
champion, Rafael Nadal.
With explosive groundstrokes and
blistering speed on the court, Alcaraz
is enthralling to watch, and the large
Hispanic crowd in Miami lapped up
his every move. He is the third-
youngest winner of an ATP Masters
1000 tournament, behind Michael
Chang (Toronto 1990) and Nadal
(Monte Carlo 2005).
“It is so special to win my first
Masters tournament here in Miami,”
Alcaraz said. “I have to keep working.
There are some big tournaments
ahead. This victory fills me with more
confidence.”
In the women’s event, Iga Swiatek
stamped her authority as the new world
No 1 by becoming the fourth player in

next year, prior to the 2024 general

beefed-up “suitability test” for club

Dorries believes evidence that a new
framework is required can be seen in
attempts to form a European Super
League last year, which included
English football’s so-called “big six”
clubs, and the financial problems
experienced at those such as Bury and
Derby County.
Sanctions imposed by the UK gov-
ernment on the Chelsea owner, Roman
Abramovich, last month for being con-
sidered an ally of the Russian president
Vladimir Putin, and the Saudi-led take-
over at Newcastle United have high-
lighted the subject of, and potential
problems with, ownership within
English football.
Dorries expects critics to accuse her
of allowing the plans to be diluted by
delaying the decision until after the
next parliamentary session, with
Crouch having previously argued a
case for “urgent” legislation.

The FA and the Premier League have
been fiercely against Crouch’s pro-
posals, whereas the English Football
League sees benefits in the governing
body being outside the FA.
Crouch’s review of football govern-
ance, which consulted a wide range of
fan groups, was triggered by the plight
of Bury, who were expelled from the
Football League in 2019 after collapsing
into administration.
