Bill Edgar on MacDougall’s new
rival and Wembley’s long wait

GAME IN

NUMBERS

Scoreline wait: it’s
all over

When Rotherham United beat
Sutton United in the Papa John’s
Trophy final yesterday it was the
first senior cup final to finish 4-2
at Wembley since England beat
West Germany in the 1966 World
Cup final. It was the 247th cup
final match since 1966 (counts the
FA Cup, League Cup, Football
League Trophy, Full Members’
Cup, Anglo-Italian Cup, FA
Trophy, FA Vase, FA Amateur
Cup, European Championship and
the main European club
competitions). Rotherham
emulated Alf Ramsey’s team by
conceding the first and recovering
to be level at 2-2 after 90 minutes
before scoring twice in extra time.

England late show

If England reach the World Cup
final this year it would be their
latest match in a calendar year —
December 18, compared with the
present latest of December 15, the
date they faced Luxembourg in

  1. If Ukraine emerge
from the play-offs they will join
England in the World Cup’s first
    all-vowel-initial group, along with
    Iran and the United States.

Liverpool sequences

Liverpool are the first team in top-
flight history to have recorded —
all in the same season — two 1-0s
in a row, two 2-0s in succession,
two consecutive 3-0s, two 4-0s in
a row and two 5-0s in succession.
Jürgen Klopp’s team won 2-0 at
home to Watford, whose manager,
Roy Hodgson, is the first since
Sheffield Wednesday’s Jack
Marshall in 1968 to have faced as
many as seven away games
among his first ten top-flight
fixtures of a spell.

Highs on five

London teams sit third to sixth in
the Premier League table; the
division’s three Midlands sides are
eighth to tenth; and the three
most southerly clubs
(Southampton, Crystal Palace
and Brighton & Hove Albion) are
11th to 13th. Manchester City’s first
league goals of March and April
were both a fifth-minute strike by
Kevin De Bruyne; their first
league goals in August and
November this season were both a
seventh-minute own goal. The
36-year-old Ashley Young’s
36th-minute own goal when
facing Wolverhampton
Wanderers on Saturday left his
Aston Villa team stuck on 36
points. It was the Premier
League’s earliest goal by a
substitute for eight years.

Ashley Young of Villa scores his
first-half own goal against Wolves

Hitting back again

Before the weekend no team since
January 2016 had conceded the
opening goal of a Premier League
game in the 39th minute or later
yet recovered to win by at least a
three-goal margin — then
Brentford did so against Chelsea
on Saturday and Tottenham
Hotspur repeated the trick against
Newcastle United yesterday. It was
the sixth time in the past seven
seasons that Spurs have scored
five or more goals in a top-flight
match despite conceding first
(they also recorded that feat
against Bournemouth, Leicester
City, Everton, Southampton and
Manchester United) — no other
team have done so more than
twice in that period.

Fool steam ahead

Friday was April Fool’s Day
because the date was 1/4 (1st of
April); Saturday seemed like April
Fool’s Day because one game
finished 1-4: Chelsea 1, Brentford

  1. In 12 of the 43 seasons from
1966 to 2009, the question: “which
league tiers are those two west
London clubs in this year?” would
    have brought the answer: “Chelsea
    1, Brentford 4.” Brentford’s head
    coach, Thomas Frank, and his
    Chelsea counterpart Thomas
    Tuchel, share a six-letter first
name, are based six miles apart
and were born six weeks apart; on
    Saturday Brentford took the lead
    six minutes after falling behind
    to Chelsea.

Mitrovic a marvel

Having scored 13 more league
goals than any other player in the
four divisions this season,
Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic is
on course for the biggest lead in
the league goalscoring chart over
one campaign since 1970-71, when
Ted MacDougall’s 42 goals for
Bournemouth put him 14 ahead of
West Bromwich Albion’s Tony
Brown. Mitrovic has scored 37,
with Bournemouth’s Dominic
Solanke and Newport County’s
Dominic Telford next on 24.
