Pastel hues
Michal’s gentle image calls
on muted tones and colours to
create a sense of tranquility. He’s
deliberately styled the model in
his original image to match the
neutral background behind her.
Change of gear
Michal’s original portrait image (above) was
shot on film using a Mamiya RZ67 Pro II. He
wanted to break the perfection of the image,
and used his Canon EOS 6D Mk II to capture
the image through water. “I shot through a
special aquarium, where I moved the water
to create the abstract picture. I also used
lights and a remote controller.”
Breaking the rules
“I was inspired by both famous
- Picasso, Matisse – and modern
painters, those artists not afraid
to break classic portrait rules.”
Michal wanted to bring new
techniques to his photography.
“I find excitement in the
creative process,” he says,
“as the possibilities of water
curvature are endless.”

n his series Curves, Zahornacky was
looking for a way to go beyond the classical
beauty of a model. By shooting a set of
original film portraits through water,
he distorted their perfect symmetry
and created a final result that looked, at first glance,
more like an abstract painting.
“The curvature of the images was achieved by using
the physical properties of water,” he says. “In my pieces,
I am questioning the viewer’s perception of aesthetics and
encouraging them to find beauty in imperfection,” he says.
