Assemble Triangle-
Squares
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no
direction is specified, press seam
toward darker fabric.
- Use a pencil to mark two diagonal
lines in an X on wrong side of each
purple tone-on-tone 6" square
and cream tone-on-tone 6" square
(Diagram 1). - Layer a marked purple tone-on-
tone square atop a yellow tone-on-
tone 6" square. Sew^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side
of each diagonal line (Diagram 2). - Cut layered 6" squares into four
3" squares (Diagram 3). Cut each 3"
square on its diagonal line to make
eight triangles (Diagram 4). Press
each triangle open to make eight
purple/yellow triangle-squares. Trim
each triangle-square to 2^1 ⁄ 2 " square
including seam allowances.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make 16
purple/yellow triangle-squares total.
5. Using remaining marked purple
tone-on-tone squares and orange
print 6" squares, repeat steps 2 and 3
to make 32 purple/orange triangle-
squares (Diagram 5); you will use 28.
6. Referring to Diagram 5, repeat
steps 2 and 3 using marked assorted
cream tone-on-tone squares and
remaining yellow tone-on-tone,
orange print, pink print, and magenta
tone-on-tone 6" squares to make:- 48 cream/yellow triangle-squares
- 72 cream/orange triangle-squares
- 48 cream/pink triangle-squares
- 24 cream/magenta triangle-squares
(you will use 20)
Assemble Center Units
- Referring to Diagram 6, sew
together four purple/yellow triangle-
squares in pairs, noting rotation of
triangle-squares. Join pairs to make
a purple/yellow subunit. The subunit
should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make
four purple/yellow subunits total. - Lay out four purple/orange
triangle-squares, four orange print
21 ⁄ 2 × 41 ⁄ 2 " rectangles, and a purple/
yellow subunit in three rows
(Diagram 7). Sew together pieces
in rows. Join rows to make a purple
center unit. The unit should be
81 ⁄ 2 " square including seam
allowances. Repeat to make four
purple center units total.
3. Using cream/yellow triangle-
squares, repeat Step 1 to make 12
cream/yellow subunits (Diagram 8).
4. Using cream/orange triangle
squares, orange print 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 41 ⁄ 2 "
rectangles, and cream/yellow
subunits, repeat Step 2 to make 12
cream center units (Diagram 9).
Assemble Units A–P
Refer to diagrams carefully for fabric
placement and orientation of seams
in triangle-squares.
- Sew together a purple/orange
triangle-square and a purple tone-
on-tone 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 81 ⁄ 2 " rectangle to make
Unit A (Diagram 10). The unit
should be 2^1 ⁄ 2 × 101 ⁄ 2 " including
seam allowances. Repeat to make
four A units total.
