WinslowHomeroncesaid:“Neverputmorethan
twowavesina picture;it’sfussy.”Artistslearnquickly
thatthere’sa lotofpowerinsimplicity,andstrive—as
theycomposeand
create—tofollowthe
familaradage:Less
ismore.Howaston-
ishingit is,then,to
discoverjusthow
difficultsimplicityis
toachieve.
Inthisissue,we

drawntothehuman
faceandfigureas
subjectsfortheir
art-making.ForMichaelLatala(onpage22),it’sa
genrethatallowshimtocommunicatethebeautyhe
seesintheworld.Eventhoughhisgoalistoconvey
a model’suniquespirit,hedoesthatnotbycaptur-
ingeachandeverydetail,butratherbysimplifying
them:“Overtheyears,I’velearnednottooverwork
mypaintings,”hesays.“I’malwaystryingtoeditor
simplifytheimagethatI’mtryingtocreate.”
Similarly,artistJustinMaaspointsout(onpage
8)that,whendrawingthehumanface,wemaybe
temptedtofocusoncapturingallofthedetailsofthe
individualfeatures,butgettingthecorrectplacement
ofthosefeatureswillactuallyhavea greaterimpact
onthelikeness.
Noneofthismeansthatthecreativeconceptbehind
a paintingshouldbespare.Whenit comestotheidea,
it’sOKtoengagecomplexity.But,whenit comesto
execution—thesimpler,thebetter.PJ
