Sedona, I was struck

by the gentle move-

ment of this stream

along with the brilliant

reflection. The energy

foreground, along

with the swirling water,

was the anchor for the

painting. I knew that

would be the key to the

painting’s success.”

“This is a portrait of a

friend. Heather is a poet

and writer. She was sitting

for a different painting

and, while she was resting

between poses, she’d

become absorbed in her

writing. It only seemed the

natural thing to turn those

moments into a portrait, so

I abandoned my first paint-

ing and began this one. We

were together in the same

space yet fully focused on

our own work. It was a very

peaceful experience.”
