“Stylistically, the range of pastel
application is not only exciting
to see, but also artists continue
to explore new visions.”

“This is a painting that captures a lin-
gering interval between daylight and
dusk in the foothills of the Sangre de
Christo mountains. The street lights of
Santa Fe just begin to emerge as the sun
drops in the distance to a pale wash.”

“In this painting, the reclin-
ing figure is veiled to create
a diaphanous barrier or
window. The quiet moment
of the figure is juxtaposed
with an abalone shell in the
foreground. The abalone in
Italian is ‘orecchia di mare,’
which loosely translates
to ‘ear of the sea.’ Hence,
the title Listen [listen to the
sea]. I was given this aba-
lone shell by a student who
had lived in California. At
one time, California had
such an abundance that it
served ‘abalone steaks’ as
big as dinner plates. Now,
due to overharvesting, it’s
hard to find specimens
reaching even four inches.
This cautionary tale is a
sub-meaning.”
