Fakir D’Oudairies was a comfortable
11-length winner of the grade one
Marsh Chase (3.30) 12 months ago and
it is difficult to see why he will not stage
a repeat at Aintree today.
He claimed a third top-flight success
in the Ascot Chase in February and
comes here fresh having missed the
Cheltenham Festival last month.
Several of his main market rivals here
have shown their best form over two
miles and are not guaranteed to cope
with this longer trip. By contrast, it is
the perfect distance for Fakir
D’Oudairies and he will be hard to beat.
L’Homme Presse will be a hot favour-
ite for the Betway Mildmay Novices’
Chase (2.55) but could be vulnerable on
the drying ground and Ahoy Senor is
preferred. He could not cope with
L’Homme Presse in the closing stages

Clan Des Obeaux, who is part-owned
by Sir Alex Ferguson, returned to his
brilliant best to land the grade one
Betway Bowl for a second time at
Aintree yesterday.
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls had
bypassed the Cheltenham Festival with
his ten-year-old, who had been beaten
on his first two starts this season.
Nicholls also deserves credit for fitting
Clan Des Obeaux with blinkers for the
first time and the decision was vindicat-
ed as he held on by a length from Irish
Gold Cup winner Conflated.
The Nicky Henderson-trained
Epatante, who had finished second to
Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle
at Cheltenham, landed the Betway
Aintree Hurdle. She was left clear by
the last-flight fall of Zanahiyr but ap-
peared to be in control at the time and
strolled home by 14 lengths.
The only Irish-trained winner on the
card came in the concluding bumper.

Fakir D’Oudairies

can stage a repeat

Rob Wright Racing Editor

at Cheltenham last month, but did not
jump as well as he can there.
Back at a track that suits — he
thrashed Bravemansgame by seven
lengths in a grade one hurdle at this
meeting a year ago — Ahoy Senor
could be tough to pass if getting into a
good early rhythm with his jumping.
Bold Endeavour looks interesting in
the Cavani Menswear Sefton Novices’
Hurdle (4.40). Bought for £190,000
after easily winning an Irish point-to-
point, this gelding won his first three
starts over hurdles.
He was unsuited by a drop in trip
when losing his unbeaten record in a
grade two race at Kelso last time and
was outpaced turning for home but
stayed on well in the closing stages to
finish third. This first attempt at three
miles over hurdles seems sure to suit
Bold Endeavour well and, despite this
step up in class, he looks too big at the
20-1 generally on offer.

Ferguson a

winner again
