On a giant screen adjacent to the stand
that will for ever bear his stellar name,
Shane Warne was commemorated at
lunchtime through snapshots of his
career and the acclaim of the Hamp-
shire hierarchy.
This was followed by prolonged
applause from the spectators and, after
play had resumed, a wicket taken by
Liam Dawson through a variant of spin
bowling that his mentor would have
greatly appreciated.
The one batsman who stymied
Hampshire on this opening day was
James Hildreth, back in form after a
lean season last year. He had made 87
with ten fours, his flowing square drive
to the fore, when Dawson chose to bowl
his first ball, a loopy yorker, out of the
front of his left hand. Somerset’s top
scorer did not pick up the flight by some
way and jabbed downward too late.
Warne’s Colgate-white smile would
have indicated his joy over that. He was,
according to Giles White, Hampshire’s
director of cricket, “the best cricketer
ever” and he added how impressive he
was off the field: “Shane gave you
everything when talking to him.”
Among the 1,000 or so spectators gath-
ered in front of the screen was Shaun
Udal, the former off spinner, who said:
“Groundsmen tried to nullify Shane

Rory Burns became the first man to
1,000 runs last year but it was Ryan
Patel, his Surrey opening partner, who
bounded to this summer’s first fifty.
Against wayward Warwickshire seam-
ers, contending with gusts that proved
local Met Office alerts all too accurate,
two sixes in three overs helped him race
there in 52 balls before the season was
an hour old.
By this stage Burns had yet to reach
his eighth run, albeit Patel had taken
twice as much of the strike. But in a
complement of adhesion and attack,
the pair scored 117 before the last sched-
uled ball before lunch found Burns, out
for 41, beaten in the air and returning a
catch to Danny Briggs, whose fine six-
over spell of spin had at last applied
some limited control.
With the groundstaff fighting billow-
ing covers like crews manning the sails
of a 19th-century clipper, only 19 min-
utes’ play was then possible before
4.50pm. Sadly for Patel, who in 17 subse-
quent games has been unable to add to
his solitary century in 2019, this proved
enough for him to launch a flat-footed
slash and edge behind for 75.
Surrey remained keen to enjoy a
good batting pitch and a short Hollies
Stand boundary though, surprisingly,
Hashim Amla, out for two, failed to
cover one that nipped back to clip the
top of off. Ollie Pope fluently reached
40 from 46 balls when the latest squall
swept in after another 40-minute burst
of play. Under new rules, and rain per-
mitting, eight overs will now be added
to each of the next two days.

A

lastair Cook
made his 70th
first-class
century as Essex took
total command on the
opening day of their
match against Kent at
Chelmsford, above.

Cook, 37, the
former England
captain who retired
from Test cricket in
2018, was out for
exactly 100 and
shared in a stand of
220 for the first
wicket with Nick
Browne, who
made 107.
Dan Lawrence,
returning to the
county ranks after a
winter touring with
England, was then out
for seven as Kent

clawed back some
respectability.
Elsewhere, Stephen
Eskinazi’s century put
Middlesex into a
strong position
against Derbyshire at
Lord’s. He put on a
second-wicket stand
of 186 with opener
Josh de Caires. The
19-year-old son of
Mike Atherton, the
former England
captain, made 80, his
maiden first-class
half-century.

and me through ensuring the ball
would not turn. Well, Shane mainly.”
Udal, like Dawson, really benefited
from Warne’s seven years with Hamp-
shire. “He was a conjuror. The impact
Shane had on this club can never be ex-
tinguished,” Rod Bransgrove, their
chairman who flew to Melbourne last
week for Warne’s memorial service,
said. If Hampshire do become county
champions, having come close to doing
so last year, then their former captain’s
legacy, his determination and attacking
mindset, will have played a part.
They dismissed Somerset, who
bravely chose to bat, for 180 and the
openers, Joe Weatherley and Ian Hol-
land, had put on 109 by the close. All six
bowlers used — Warne might not have
liked seeing Mason Crane, his succes-
sor as leg spinner, omitted — took a
wicket or more. Kyle Abbott’s second
ball was a beauty, swinging in a fraction
and then catching the edge of Tom
Abell’s bat as it moved away off the
pitch. There was just sufficient move-
ment for the South African and
Mohammad Abbas, who had Ben
Green well held by Dawson at second
slip and Lewis Goldsworthy leg-before.
Hildreth, in his 20th season, initially
was beaten several times outside off
stump by Abbott yet gradually began to
middle the ball. But for as many as nine
colleagues being unavailable for rea-
sons ranging from Covid to a shoulder
injury to being centrally contracted, he
might not have been playing. A request
to the ECB to include Jack Leach and
Craig Overton, both rested, fell on
stony ground.
