Missy Elliott has been pretty quiet on the
hip-hop scene since releasing her sixth
studio album The Cookbook back in 2005.
The Virginia-born rapper has released one-
off singles over the years, but ICONOLOGY
is her first collection of new material for 14
years. The positive critical reception to this

- Elliott first embarked on her music career
as a member of the all-female R&B outfit
Sista in the 1990s. - Elliott’s absence from the spotlight in
recent years has been largely due to her
being diagnosed with Grave’s disease, which
had evidenced itself in leg spasms. - However, with her condition responding
well to treatment, Elliott later revealed
that she would be eager to return to her
music career. - Through social media, Elliott announced
ICONOLOGY only several hours before it
was released. - Iconology comes about half a year after
the single “Tempo”, a collaboration between
Elliott and Lizzo.
