Spring bling? It’s a thing

Christmas-party season, usually our chance to unleash metallics,

glitter and OTT eveningwear upon the dancefloor, was a bit of a

nonstarter last year (not to mention the one before). But now is the

winter of our discontent made glorious summer by enough sparkle

on the catwalks and in shop windows to turn any occasion into a Big

Night Out. Gilded Glamour is the theme for this year’s Met Gala (the

swankiest red carpet of the year), but also the dress code for Friday

nights at the pub — see Alexander McQueen’s silver foil dress,

Altuzarra’s mermaid paillettes and Dolce & Gabbana’s molten

tailoring for men and women. Try a crystal-tipped manicure, add

Euphoria-esque gems to your eye make-up and take accessorising

cues from Drake’s £1.4 million diamond necklace. More is more,

and even then possibly not enough.

Monty Don

Most gardening experts seem to assume we’ve all got

acres to tend, as well as endless hours and two green

thumbs to do it with. If you haven’t any of the above

and are looking at a scrubby patch of grass, cracked

courtyard or even just some sunny windowsills, Ben

Dark has taken a different approach in his book The

Grove: A Nature Odyssey in 19½ Front Gardens (Mitchell

Beazley £16.99). The man Gardeners’ World magazine called “the

millennial Monty” has chosen to impart his wisdom — and

infectious excitement when it comes to discovering more about

plants — through just what he found growing in the front gardens

of a single street in southeast London, close to the flat that he

shares with his wife and their baby boy. Get digging.
