HIT THE BEACH IN
NORTHUMBERLAND
Bamburgh has one of Britain’s
most spectacular sweeps of
soft, yellow sand and, unlike
on many stretches in Britain,
dogs are allowed to race
around its expanse year-
round. Bring your body
boards or kayaks and throw
yourselves into the sea, or
scale some of the towering
sand dunes that offer views
over the beach. Presiding
over this corner of the coast is
the imposing Bamburgh
Castle, which welcomes
dogs into its grounds and
aviation museum too
(bamburghcastle.com).

BE INSPIRED BY THE
SCOTTISH BORDERS
Sir Walter Scott loved his dogs
— so much so that he had one,
his beloved Maida,
immortalised in sculpture to
guard his front door. So it’s
fitting that Abbotsford, Scott’s
manicured estate in the
Scottish Borders near
Melrose, is open to dog
owners seeking somewhere to
wander. While they’re not
allowed inside the house, dogs
can go with you everywhere
else including in the visitor
centre. The planted gardens
MAKE A MEAL OF IT
IN PEMBROKESHIRE
The Pembrokeshire coastline
is fringed with irresistibly soft
sandy beaches, but they’ve
got lots to offer beyond a
classic bucket-and-spade day.
Head to windswept Manorbier
or Pendine Sands and dog-
lover Dan Moar, who runs the
Black Rock Outdoor Company,
will take you on a foraging and
rockpooling adventure
(blackrockoutdoorcompany.
co.uk). A lifetime resident of
the region, he knows it all:
during this six-hour session
you’ll seek out sea urchins and
edible seaweed, find snacks in

SMELL THE FLOWERS
IN CORNWALL
Once a barren china clay pit,
the Eden Project is now one of
Britain’s best-known gardens.
On a site about the size of
35 football pitches lies a
landscape of thriving plant life,
from prehistoric planted beds
to modern-day crops including
rapeseed. Dogs can go
everywhere with you except
inside the biomes, so you’ll
need to take it in turns to
explore those giant
greenhouses. Nevertheless,
there are still 20 outdoor
exhibits so allow at least two
hours to walk the grounds,
featuring seasonal beds,
lavender and tea. Added
adventure can be had on the
zip lines and giant swing
(edenproject.com).
