Sammovedto the Washington,DC area
in1961,takingajob at NASAin 1964.It was
therethat he met his wife,BarbaraReich.Sam
and Barbaramarriedin 1968.
Samwas fascinatedby computershis whole
life and remainedin the informationtechnolo-
gy field overacareerthat spannedmorethan
40 years.HejoinedNASAto workon ateam
that installedthe first mainframecomputerat
GoddardSpaceFlightCenter.After five years
at NASA,Sam joinedCommunicationsSatellite
Corporation(COMSAT), wherehe spent 22
yearsand managedthe transitionfrommain-
framecomputersto localareanetworks.In
1990,Sam wentto workfor InformationMan-
agementConsultants,enteringthe worldof
workflowmanagementand risingto vice presi-
dent.In 2000,he movedto Grant Thorntonas
aconsultantin the areaof computersecurity,
becomingone of the first CertifiedInformation
Systemsauditors.Heretiredin 2007.
Samenjoyedtravel,photography,gardening
and was an expertat householdrepairs.He
was also masterfulwithplaydough,spending
hoursplayingwithhis granddaughterwhen
she was young.
Samwaspredeceasedby his parentsand

Eileen’sachievementsservedas an inspira-

affairs.
Heis survivedbyhislovingwifeof 59 years,
Maria(Riet)Illes,daughterVivianBrownand
son-in-lawDavid,belovedgranddaughter
SophieGrace,andotherfamilymembersin
theUS,HungaryandSlovakia.
Hewasprecededindeathbyhisbeloved
sonGezaM.Illeswhodiedin 1998 atthe
ageof24.

callingwastoconnectstudentswiththeir
“innerpoet,”usingtheexpansivecollection
ofwritingexercisesshedevelopedover45-
plusyearsofteaching.Someofhermost
rewardingwork waswith underserved
populations,includingthosewithadditional
needs,incarceratedindividuals,andpeople
inhospice,griefcampandnursinghomes.
EvenduringtheCOVIDshutdown,shefound
awaytocontinueherworkhelpingindivid-
ualswritetheirpersonalmemoirsfortheir
family.
CarolwasproudofherScottishheritage
andactivelyparticipatedintheClanKeith
Society,USA.Anaccomplishedpianist,she
hadapassionforclassicalmusic,playing
themusicofChopin,Beethoven,Bachand
manyothercomposersintoher80s.She
maintainedawidecircleoffriendswith
whomshecorrespondedfrequently,and
sheviewedherselfasaconnector—bring-
ingpeopletogetherwiththosewhomthey
weremeanttomeet.
AprivatecelebrationofCarol’slifewillbe
heldatafuturedate.Inlieuofflowers,

al homefor manyyearswasthe State
Department,wherehe particularlyenjoyed

Duringhis workingyears,John routinelygot
to his deskby 7a.m. so he couldattend
his daughter’safternoonsportsgamesand
his owneveningcollegeclasses:He earned
asecondbachelor’sdegree,instudioart,
in 1996.He wasaRenaissancemanwho
builtfurniture,carvedaward-winningduck
decoys,weldedmetalsculpturesof giraffes
and tortoises,and paintedvividportrayalsof
his worldtravels.Helovedanimals,especial-
ly cats;earlygolf gameswith friends;playing
his flamencoguitar;and takingimpeccable
careof the red convertiblehe drovetoo
fast on arearoads.Hewas alwaysquickto
help friendsand strangers;in his lateryears
he wasaloyalvolunteerfor the National
Zoo and the AlexandriaSeaportFoundation.
The job title Johnlovedmostwas “Dad.”A
devotedfatherand grandfatherwho delight-
ed in everystageof parenthood,Johnwas
cheerfullypresentfor all momentslargeand
small.Towardthe endof his life,when
remindedof this,hesmiledand said,“That’s
whatI’m here for.”
He is survivedby his wife of nearly50 years,
KathleenWaters Sander,ofAlexandria;his
daughter,LibbySander,son-in-law,Brock
Read,and grandson,all of Washington;and
his twin brother,JamesSander,ofZanesville,
OH.

Of Alexandria,VA,died peacefullyat home
on March14, 2022,surroundedby his loving
family.
Bornin Buffalo,NY, and raised in Cincinnati,
OH, Johnwas akind and energeticmanof
manytalents.Asastudentat the University
of Cincinnati,he beganlessonsin flamenco
guitar,initiatingalifelonginterestin the
arts and travel.He enlistedin the U.S. Air
Force aftergraduationand wasstationed
in Germanyfrom 1967 to 1971.Whilein
the service,helearnedMorsecode—and
becameadenizenof the beergardensand
ski slopesof Europe.In1972, he earnedan
MBAfromXavierUniversityon the GI Bill and
marriedhis belovedwife.
The couplemovedto SilverSpring—where
they liveduntil 2005—in 1974 so Johncould
continuehis careeras afinancialmanager
