a good mono conversion will
dr astically increase the dramatic
im pact in your image, and can
cr eate contrast out of flat
colours and lighting. It can also
be used to hide a multitudeof
si ns, including soft focus. While
it ’s no substitute for perfecting
yo ur camera technique, it’sa
gr eat save if you’ve just missed
fo cus by a hair.
Edit your homeworkshots
The colour sliders in Affinity Photo’s Black &
White Adjustment Layer are powerful, so use
them with some restraint to keep the final effect
natural. While it’s handy to nudge your exposure
se ttings for more impact, watch out for blown-out
hi ghlights, or lost detail in the shadows of the
image – these are common mistakes that can be
made in the edit. BEFORE

MASTER THE ART
OF MONOCHROME
Click on the Adjustment tab and choose Black
& White. In the dialogue box, you’ll notice six
colour sliders, which control the brightness of
their respective hues throughout the image.
Slide these to the right to lighten, or left to
darken. Red controls skin tones. Yellow affects
skin tones, as well as lighter foliage. Green will
alter darker foliage. Cyan will be present in the
lighter parts of the sky, while blue will change
darker parts of the sky or underexposed whites.
Magenta is often absent from images.
