The new theory I have elaborated on in this book is based on the
existence of archetypal patterns, a concept Jung introduced. I have
not discarded the model of women’s psychology that Jung described;
I see it as fitting some but not all women. The chapters on the vul-
nerable goddesses and Aphrodite refine Jung’s model further, while
the three chapters that follow—on Artemis, Athena, and Hes-
tia—provide new patterns that go beyond Jung’s concepts.
