ENGLAND: Arsenal team-mates
Sead Kolasinac and Mesut Ozil
escape unhurt after being

each country has been floated but is unlikely.
While Malaysia and Indonesia have the requisite
80,000-capacity stadiums, all would need lots of
work, so perhaps only Singapore’s National Stadium
would meets FIFA’s requirements as it stands. Even
in Thailand and Vietnam, countries accustomed to
hosting plenty of tourists, there would have to be
investment in infrastructure.
Yet Southeast Asia’s effort is in danger of losing
its biggest member as Indonesia is discussing a joint
bid with Australia. Both tried for the 2022 event,
even though they would prefer to forget it ever
happened. While Indonesia fizzled out way before
the decision was made, Australia went all the way
but received just a single vote.
For all that, a joint bid is perhaps not a bad idea.
With India and China, not to mention others such
as a joint Korea bid, all expressing interest, Australia
will not get the tournament alone. Talk of a New
Zealand collaboration won’t cut it, especially as they
belong to different confederations.
Indonesia and Australia would help to counter
each other’s weaknesses. While Indonesia has
perhaps more passion than any other footballing
nation in Asia, Australia provides tournament
knowhow and top-class infrastructure. The biggest
drawback would be the distance between the two.
However, as Thai football chief Somyot says:
“There is still a long time to go until 2034. Many
things can happen.”
