 Moxidectin:
Off-label use for demodicosis
Macrocylic lactone with GABA agonist activity
Few studies available regarding oral efficacy
Oral administration of the injectable formulation: 0.4 mg/kg q24h
Do not use for ivermectin-sensitive breeds
Imidacloprid (10%) and moxidectin (2.5%) spot-on product: variable efficacy;


most effective when applied weekly.


 Doramectin:
Off-label use for demodicosis
Macrocylic lactone with GABA agonist activity
Weekly subcutaneous injections at 0.6 mg/kg
Do not use for ivermectin-sensitive breeds.


 Isoxazolines:
Off-label use for demodicosis; long-term experience lacking
Selective inhibitor of arthropod GABA and L-glutamate-gated chloride channels
Afoxalaner 2.5 mg/kg every 4 weeks; approved for use in dogs over 1.8 kg and


over 8 weeks of age for flea/tick control; off-label use for demodicosis; use with
caution in patients with a history of seizures
Fluralaner 25 mg/kg every 12 weeks; approved for use in dogs over 2 kg and over

6 months of age for flea/tick control; off-label use for demodicosis
Sarolaner 2 mg/kg every 4 weeks; approved for use in dogs over 1.4 kg and over

6 months of age for flea/tick control; off-label use for demodicosis
Well tolerated; adverse effects include transient vomiting or diarrhea, and

anorexia.


Drugs of Choice: Cats


 Lime sulfur dips:
Current treatment of choice
Topical 2% lime sulfur dips are the safest and most effective
Once weekly for at least 4–6 weeks and continuing for 1–2 months after clinical


cure and negative scrapings
All in-contact cats should be treated in cases ofDemodex gatoi
An Elizabethan collar should be used to prevent ingestion until the dip is dry, to

avoid irritation.


 Amitraz:
Amitraz solutions (125–250 ppm): applied weekly for 4–6 treatments: risk of


toxicity.


 Doramectin:
Anecdotal report of resolution ofD. catiin three cats
Dosage: 0.6 mg/kg by subcutaneous injection once weekly for three injections.


 Ivermectin:
Anecdotal reports of efficacy
Dosage: 0.3–0.6 mg/kg q24h or every other day given orally
